Introduction
The geographical area of IBGE has as its defining characteristic the production of multi-thematic information which presents the dimensions of national reality: physical, urban, rural, economic, social, and political, where countless elements and actors mark social and space dynamics. Contemporaneous geography, so, develops and rejuvenates itself in an attempt to deal with forms and processes of territory organization.
In this sense, technologies of digital thematic mapping and of analyses based on geographical information systems support the increasing elaboration of regional division models, necessary to perceive spatial differences and diversity, using geographical scales suitable to the analyzed phenomena.
By producing information that incorporates and articulates social and economic statistical data, cartographic bases, and awareness of natural resources, geography participates not only in the elaboration of territorial bases, – necessary to the survey and the release of information produced by IBGE – but also in the acquisition of knowledge about the national territory setting. The descriptive analysis of organization and management of the national territory satisfies the needs of government and society, making it possible to direct statistical surveys and subsidize the formulation and the monitoring of territory policies.
