Atlas
Atlas of Literary Representations of Brazilian Regions – volume 2
Brazilian “Sertões” I
In 2006, with the release of the volume Southern Brazil, IBGE started the collection Atlas of Literary Representations of Brazilian Regions, which, using maps to different scales, photographs and satellite images, aims at identifying and representing Brazilian regions that were remarkable plot elements in some great national literature works. In this mapping, identity is the core element for the individualization of different territory segments that form the national picture.
By providing continuity to this pioneer project in the Institution, IBGE gladly presents its new work with some of the regions formed during the long occupation process of the national territory, since the 16th century, especially in segments to which, for any reason, the condition of “sertão” was attributed. Confirming the work proposal taken since the first volume of the collection, the territory divisions now suggested – Sertões do Leste, Sertões do Ouro and Sertões dos Currais, Sertão de Cima and Sertões Nordestinos – are oriented by neither political administrative divisions nor Brazilian geographical regionalization, but by characteristics and extensions based on the economic, populational, cultural and environmental dynamics that originated them.
Initially with texts and maps, the publication portrays each of the selected segments in its geographical dimension, based on the regional division defined by both IBGE and other institutions. Next it focuses the cultural dimension of these territory units derived from the perception of the region according to literature. This approach is expressed in selected passages of José de Alencar, Coelho Netto, Agripa Vasconcelos, João Guimarães Rosa, Herberto Sales, Afrânio Peixoto, Cláudio Aguiar, Ariano Suassuna, among other important writers that make the object of this volume – the “sertão” – visible. Maps of the region emerging from the romance are presented, as well as photographs and images. In all texts, regional terms in bold type are relative to territory and its process of appropriation, forming a glossary at the end of the work.
By offering this Atlas to the Brazilian society, IBGE aligns itself with the most recent trends in geographical studies and human sciences in general, which try to incorporate the cultural dimension to the agenda of researches about population and territory dynamics.
My 1st Atlas
Once upon a time there was a map. It is small. But it may also be big. More zigzag lines than straight ones form its contour. In the middle, more lines and points mark the places of roads, railways, rivers, endangered species, cities, states and even the country. That is it. A map may represent all of this and a lot more. With this map we can discover a fascinating world of information. How about beginning now? Embark on My First Atlas with Júlia and Bebeto, and discover that constructing a map may be simple and funny.
Atlas of the 2000 Population Census
The Atlas of the 2000 Census include the following themes: Main Characteristics of the Population Distribution in the World, Territorial and Population Structure, Population Spatial Mobility and Urbanization, Housing Conditions and Population Social and Economic Profile.
Themes are presented in a comprehensive and interconnected way, revealing the various dimensions that form the Brazilian population dynamics and demographic profile, emphasizing regional specificities. Each thematic group is made up of texts and pictures such as maps, graphs, tables, photographs and satellite images that present, by means of the spatial analysis of census data, the configuration of the Brazilian territory.
Sanitation Atlas - 2011
The deep regional inequalities in the sanitation infrastructure make the State and Brazilian society still aim to achieve universal access and improved services of water supply, sewage, urban cleaning, garbage collection and urban drainage.
This Atlas gathers information from the 2008 National Survey of Basic Sanitation (PNSB 2008) and the 2010 Population Census. It was elaborated in partnership with the Ministry of Cities and considered statistics of the 2010 Population Census and data from other organizations and institutes. Thus, it offers a variety of data, focusing not only on spatial distribution, quality and effectiveness of the systems and services offered in the country, but also on the relation of basic sanitation with environmental preservation and population’ s quality of life. The Atlas also provides the spatial visualization of some themes by hydrographic basin, which is crucial in the analysis of the impact of land use and occupation on hydric resources. Maps, analytical texts, graphs, tables, images and a glossary with key terms facilitate comprehension of the selected themes.
Geographic School Atlas
Crucial for the knowledge of society, territory and the dynamics of the population in Brazil and other countries in the world, the Atlas approaches several aspects of our and other nations’ reality, such as cultural and environmental diversity; demographic characteristics; economic space; urbanization; network space; regionalization; socioeconomic inequalities; population structure; natural resources; transport networks; and social, environmental and economic indicators. It also contains explanatory texts on basic notions of cartography and the formation of continents. Moreover, it takes into account the National Curriculum Parameters (PCN) of the Ministry of Education (MEC), in so far as it enables students to observe, get to know, and reflect on the characteristics of the place where they live, besides other landscapes and distant geographical spaces.
Joining geographical, cartographic and statistical data in the same volume, the Atlas offers a set of information that is indispensable to study and analyze the political, environmental and economic dimensions of Brazil and other countries. It hopes to arouse interest from the young public in the comprehension of our reality and other diverse and dynamic realities that form the sociopolitical and economic scenario of the world nowadays.
