Introduction
IBGE elaborates topographic maps and maps derived from them - national, regional, state and municipal ones - which form the bases on which related surveys are conducted and the have their results presented, with a homogeneous and connected approach of the national territory. In order to reach these objectives, the Institute has been systematically working on the topographic mapping of the country, in standard scales, according to the development degree installed or projected in the territory.
Considering the prospects of changes in society, it is necessary to promote the interconnection of different governmental levels, through organizations which use the cartography as a tool for their projects. In this respect, IBGE, due to the experience accumulated in the National Cartographic System, through the development of the Plano de Dinamização da Cartografia (Cartography Dissemination Plan), has been establishing contacts and partnerships with federal and state organizations for the identification of mutual interests and the subsequent development of works directed to the generation of a Digital Topographic Collection of Maps at national level.
In this context, IBGE is considered one of the creators of a National Cartographic Plan which can fulfill the current needs of the country and manage our national collection of maps, in such a way as to concentrate efforts and optimize the use of resources, thus obtaining an organized, consistent and fast cartographic production with reference to the dissemination and use and management of territory information.
