Summary of Social Indicators

An analysis of the Brazilian population life conditions 2010

This publication gathers indicators about the Brazilian social reality, encompassing information about demographic aspects, education, labor and income, households, families, health and specific population groups – children, teenagers and youngsters, women and the elderly – among other topics, accompanied by short commentaries that highlight some of the main characteristics observed in the different population and geographic strata.

The indicators are presented as tables and graphs, covering Brazil, its Major Regions and Federation Units, and, selected cases, also Metropolitan Areas, so as to provide elements for the elaboration of public policies and increase society access to official statistics. They are mainly based on the National Household Sample Survey and extended, in this edition, with statistics from the Survey of Basic Municipal Information and the Consumer Expenditure Survey, also conducted by IBGE, besides records from external sources.

The publication also presents a glossary with the concepts and terms considered relevant to the understanding of results. This group of information is available on the CD-ROM which comes enclosed with the publication and on the IBGE web site.

The systematization of these indicators follows international recommendations and has contributed to the understanding of changes in the demographic, social and economic profile of the population, allowing, therefore, the monitoring of social policies and the dissemination of relevant data among members of Brazilian society.
