Monthly Employment Survey (Previous Methodology)

Estimates – Metropolitan Areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre – November/2002

The results of the Monthly Employment Survey, conducted in the six biggest metropolitan areas in the country indicate decrease (-1.0%) of the number of economically active persons (participating in the job market) from October to November. The number of employed persons and of persons looking for a job recorded decrease (-0.7% and -5.3%, respectively). The average open unemployment rate faced slight decrease, having changed from 7.4% in October to 7.1% in November this year. The seasonally adjusted indicator reached 8.0% in November. The figure recorded in the previous month was 7.7%. Graph 1 shows the adjusted rate, in the period November 2001 - November 2002.

In November last year, the average open unemployment rate was 6.4%. Graph 2 presents the indicator series, in the months of November, from 1994 to 2002.

The number of workers decreased in the main activity sectors, and the most significant changes occurred in civil construction (-2.6%) and in manufacturing industry (-1.0%). In terms of employment type, there was decrease of the number of self-employed workers (-2.4%) and of workers without a formal employment contract (-1.2%); and increase of the number of workers with a formal employment contract (0.6%).

From November last year to November this year, the number of economically-active persons increased by 2.0%, as a consequence of the bigger number of persons employed (1.3%) or looking for a job (13.5%). In this period, the average rate of open unemployment increased by 0.7 percentage points. With reference to activity sectors, there was increase of the number of persons employed in services (3.8%) and in manufacturing industry (0.4%). The number of workers decreased in civil construction (-10.6%) and remained stable in trade. Among the employment types, there was increase of the number of workers with a formal contract (3.6%), of employers (1.6%) and of workers without a formal contract (0.9%). Self-employed workers recorded decrease (-2.5%).

The average yield of employed persons, relative to October this year, was R$ 797.82. In real terms, income decreased over September this year (-1.9%) and October last year (-3.9%).

With reference to employment types, from September to October, there was reduction of the average income earned by workers without a formal contract (-2.7%), of workers with a formal contract (-2.0%) and of self-employed workers (-0.5%). From October last year to October this year, there was decrease of income among workers with a formal employment contract (-5.2%), of self-employed workers (-3.9%) and of workers without a formal employment contract (-2.6%).
