Monthly Survey of Industry - Physical Production - Regional
Methodological Notes
The regional indicators consider primary data from the Monthly Survey of Industry - Physical Production (PIM – PF). The current groups of products and respondents are specific for each region.
The weighting base of the indicators is fixed and its reference is the average structure of the Gross Value Added relative to the 1998/2000 period. For the Overall Industry, according to this variable, the selected products reache the following levels of coverage: Amazonas, 38 products (72%), Pará, 23 products (73%), Northeast Region, 162 products (62%); Ceará, 62 products (61%); Pernambuco, 76 products (50%); Bahia, 79 products (66%); Minas Gerais, 143 products (64%); Espírito Santo, 24 products (71%); Rio de Janeiro, 137 products (56%); São Paulo, 490 products (55%); Paraná, 136 products (52%); Santa Catarina, 113 products (50%); Rio Grande do Sul, 197 products (55%) and Goiás, 49 products (46%).
The methodological procedures are identical to those adopted for the whole Brasil. The calculus formula is adapted from the Laspeyres index – chain-based, with weights updating.
Four types of indexes are published:
MONTHLY FIXED-BASE INDEX (INDEX-NUMBER): That index compares the production of the reference month of the index with the monthly average produced in the reference year of the survey (2002);
MONTHLY INDEX: That index compares the production of the reference month of the index with the same month of the previous year;
ACCUMULATED INDEX IN THE YEAR: That index compares the production accumulated in the year, from January to the reference month of the index, with the same period of the previous year;
ACCUMULATED INDEX IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS: That index compares the production accumulated in the reference last 12 months with the same immediately previous period.
The other INDEXES (for example, MONTH/PREVIOUS MONTH) can be obtained from the Monthly Fixed-Base Index.
The seasonal adjustment of the regional series was obtained by the X-12 ARIMA, U.S. Census Bureau. In addition to the seasonal effects, the specific treatment for the calendar effect (Trading Day), the identification of outliers and the adjustment of trading days for moving holidays (Carnival and Easter) are taken into account. The modeling was defined based on the series of 186 months (January of 1991 to June of 2006) for all the regions, except Amazonas, Pará and Goiás, which have series with 54 months (de janeiro 2002 a junho de 2006). The series were adjusted for the Overall Industry, and the adopted models are the following:
The indexes presented herein are subject to the correction of primary data concerning the respondents of the survey. Revisions are incorporated to the reference year of the survey departing from January of the previous year.
